Petronas, Dorna Sports announce new sustainable fuel for 2024 Moto2, Moto3 season

SEPANG: Petronas and Dorna Sports announced the usage of a new sustainable fuel for the Moto2 and Moto3 championships today, the opening day of the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia 2023 today.

As the official fuel supplier for both championships, the national oil company said it is committed to delivering an optimised fuel starting next season, as the two partners push towards a net-zero carbon emission future.

Petronas senior general manager (group strategic relations and communications) Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz said the key milestone highlights the shared commitment of both Petronas and Dorna Sports to create a pathway to a lower carbon future, pushing boundaries with its fluid technology solutions.

“For Petronas, the development of sustainable fuels is key in unlocking new opportunities as we look to redefine ourselves in the face of this energy transition,” she said during the event to announce the new sustainable fuel here tonight.

In 2024, Moto2 and Moto3 will be solely powered by Petronas Primax Pro-Race M2 fuel formulated with at least 40 per cent non-fossil biofuel, while continuing to meet the high octane and low oxygen requirement of the 2023 Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) fuel regulations.

This evolution in the partnership enables Petronas to support Dorna Sports in achieving its goal of powering the said championships with 100 per cent sustainable fuels by 2027.

Dorna Sports chief executive officer Carmelo Ezpeleta said 2024 marks the start of a new era for motorcycle Grand Prix racing as it takes the first step towards a new global era of zero carbon fuels.

“Working with a world-leading partner like Petronas to make this a reality in Moto2 and Moto3 is fantastic for us, ensuring both classes continue to have incredible performance at the same time as using a minimum 40 per cent non-fossil fuel, using the paddock as a testing ground before these technologies reach real customers on the street,” he said. –Bernama
